Imagine a program that not only motivates and inspires but also equips SCUSD’s Black and Brown boys with the tools to thrive both in and out of the classroom while fostering a positive school climate—welcome to Greatness Squad!

Our initiative offers engaging Tier I and Tier II activities for SCUSD’s students in grades 4, 5, and 6. Kicked off with a fun and motivational chant rally for the whole school, the program is followed by a five-week small group mentoring session called Greatness Squad. Also included is an energetic Rockin’ Recess for everyone, culminating with a festive Positivity Party in the fifth week for students, parents, and school staff.

How do we make a difference? Our approach is simple: we facilitate open discussions about life cycles, choices, and experiences that shape young lives. By sparking conversations, raising awareness, building empathy, and offering support, we aim to enhance the overall school climate and equip students with the tools they need for positive real-life outcomes.”

Why It Matters

Chronic absenteeism has a profound impact on African American, Marshallese, and American Indian boys, contributing to educational gaps. By focusing on attendance, behavior, and emotional well-being, we break down the barriers that hold them back, giving these students the support they need to thrive.

This program is about much more than just numbers; it’s about changing lives. By empowering students to show up, work hard, and be kind, we are creating a brighter future for them and their communities. We believe in their greatness, and we’re here to help them rise.

Program Overview

  1. “IN IT TO WIN IT” Chant Rally (Week 1) Tier 1 – Whole School Event

We kick off with a high-energy assembly led by motivational speaker Kevin Bracy. This rally pumps up the entire school, including staff, students, and parents, with the core message: Show Up. Work Hard. Be Kind. It sets the tone for the entire program, inspiring students to be their best.

  2. Staff Motivation Building (Week 1 or 2) Tier 1 – Staff Development Session

In this session, Kevin Bracy and Reach One Alliance’s team work directly with teachers and school staff. This 20-minute (or optional hour-long) session revitalizes educators, aligning them with the program’s goals and energizing them to lead the charge in improving school culture. When staff are motivated, the whole school benefits!

  3. The Greatness Squad (Weeks 2-6) Tier 2 – Focused Mentorship

The heart of the program! The Greatness Squad is a five-week mentorship group for 15 boys in 4th-6th grade, selected based on need. Each week, students receive:

    • Academic Guidance
    • Emotional Support
    • Behavior Management Strategies
    • Team-building Exercises
  4. Rockin’ Recess (Week 4) Tier 1 – School-Wide Engagement

Students get re-energized with a school-wide DJ session hosted by Kevin Bracy (DJ Greatness). Music, fun, and excitement promote positive school culture and remind students why it’s cool to show up every day.

  5. Family AttenDANCE GLOW Party (Week 6) Tier 1 – Family Celebration Event

In partnership with the CARE team, this family-centered event is the ultimate celebration. The Glow Party brings the whole school community together, reinforcing the importance of family involvement in education. It’s a powerful reminder that Showing Up isn’t just for students – it’s for everyone!

  6. Continued Support

Our commitment doesn’t end after five weeks. Kevin Bracy will conduct follow-up check-ins with the school to ensure ongoing success. We’ll continue monitoring attendance and engagement, offering support whenever it’s needed to ensure lasting impact.

The Imperative

Absenteeism among African American, Pacific Islander and Native American boys isn’t just a challenge – it’s an educational responsibility. Our program goes beyond the surface to address the real issues keeping students out of school and parents disengaged. By empowering families, helping them to overcome obstacles, building connections between schools and homes, we help close educational gaps and create lasting change.

Join us in making a difference! Together, we can help our students Show Up, Work Hard, and Be Kind – and watch them succeed like never before!
